In 2009, we decided to initiate a series of exploratory research visits to Windsor (Canada) to see if we could develop a program of public work in the community in collaboration with Broken City Lab. We were drawn to the city both because of Broken City Lab's innovative program of community engaged activity and because it was a place that was going through a serious rethink due to the local collapse of the auto industry, an industry that has largely defined Windsor (and its giant American neighbour Detroit) for over a century. Justin Langlois of BCL has been our primary host in Windsor and our activity has involved working with students at the University of Windsor through Rod Strickland's Green Corridor program, field work at various neighbourhoods and sites, the documentation of areas of interest and ongoing informal discussions and conversations with people in the community. Out of this work has come a set of focussed initiatives including projects lead by Lisa Hirmer and Andrew Hunter of DodoLab and commissioned projects by artist/DJ Chris Flanagan and the UK arts collective Proboscis. Working in collaboration with Broken City Lab, the projects engage with the history of the city and recent changes to the built and natural environment. The public program in Windsor will launch in the fall of 2011.
